Not Everything Has to Become Content

October 22, 2026

Some moments are worth more for having no audience.

There is a small reflex many of us have now. Something good happens, and before it is over, part of the mind has started framing it: the photo, the angle, the caption, whether it is worth posting.

I have that reflex, and I do not think it is shameful. Sharing is human, and a photograph of a good day is a gift to the people who could not be there and can become a cherished memory.

What I notice is the cost of the framing itself. The part of me composing the caption has stepped out of the moment. It is standing slightly off to one side, watching me have it, thinking about how it will read.

Some moments hold up to that. Others are smaller and quieter, and they do not survive being watched. A conversation that goes somewhere unexpected. A dinner that runs long. An hour on the water with nothing to report.

The practice I keep coming back to is simple: we can let some things go unrecorded on purpose. Decide in advance, if that helps. This dinner stays here. This walk is mine.

What we get back from this approach is hard to describe and easy to recognize. The moment ends when it ends, with no second life to maintain. It belongs to the people who were there, and to nobody else.

Some of the best moments were never meant to be seen twice.
